There is ettiquette protocal for dealing with others when they have suffered a loss. Provide her with a book that explains what is proper "in polite society." If she still disregards it, then she is simply rude. And now she knows it, even if she can't help herself. Shoshana

ANOTHER SHOOTER NOW - IN CALIFORNIA
by sammielee24 inas i'm sitting here working on my computer a news story flashed across the screen.
there is a guy holed up in yuba city, california somewhere that has called in a threat to make the va tech massacre look like a holiday!
the schools are either in lock down or going into lock down now as they try to find where the guy is - they did show a picture of him and apparently he is equipped with an ak47 and some other miscellaneous things like bombs.

Yuba City has an Assembly Hall. Perhaps he's gone there. Shoshana

Tomorrow is my Master's Defense (wish me luck)
by asleif_dufansdottir intomorrow at 2:45 arizona time i present/defend my master's research to basically the entire department (anthropology...all the 'sub-disciplines'...socio/cultural, physical and archaeology).
they've changed things a bit in the program so now all grad students who are completing their ma in any given year present on the same day in one big "ma-athon," so *everybody*...all the faculty and many of the students...will be there (defenses used to have a much smaller audience and rarely had people from more than your own sub-disc).. i'm not as nervous as i could be...i've done several different (smaller) presentations of my research both on campus at brown-bags and on-campus grad student conferences and at 2 national meetings, so i've had lots of practice.. the only bad thing is, out of a bunch of students the whole day, i'm the very.
here's to hoping they're ready to leave and *not* that, since there's nobody speaking after me, they can grill me for as long as they want .

Good luck to you. Last year this time, I finished mt JD. No thesis defense, but the bar exam loomed. In the end, looking back, I enjoyed being at the bar exam (but it took little slivers of a "relaxant" to calm me down). Sometimes, others catch me still studying for it, even though I don't have to anymore. If you truly love what you studied, you too ill find yourself doing the same thing. Enjoy the day. This is a huge moment for you. Shoshana

Pythagoras wasn't crazy after all!!!!

"If you pluck a guitar string, you will hear the music." This is the flawed statement in the article. The process of noise (or sub-noise, as the case seems to be)creation is in no way the equivalent of "making music." That would be the same as saying when I spilled flat latex paint on my floor last month, I made art. I too get frustrated by pseudo-science trying to slip a higher meaning into stuff that just doesn't exist. Pythagorus figured out other cool stuff though. Shoshana

At the Sunday meetings, I would practice holding my breath. Was able to go nearly two minutes by the time I left. I couldn't stay awake at the evening meetings, though. Even when I was a teenanger. This infuriated my mother, which added to the interest. I wrote a screenplay outline and some scenes at the last summer convention I attended. Shoshana

The many ways Jehovah's Witnesses harm children
by under_believer inwas talking with my therapist this morning and i made the comment "i guess i don't mind if she is a witness as long as it doesn't harm the kids.
" this got me thinking about all the ways that being raised as witnesses harms or can harm children.
1) teaches children to have an air of superiority regarding other human beings.

Children are taught to be "conditionally honest." If someone is not entitled to honest information, or if it could hurt them, they are taught (by example and instruction) to lie. Shoshana

For you "sisters" who married in the "Truth"...
by Frequent_Fader_Miles injust a poll question.
at the first convention/ assembly following your wedding ... did you parade around the convention site gloating in other sisters' faces, showing off your new husband?
i've never done it, but i can't help but suspect that others do.

The last convention I attended was when I was 19. I suspect I already knew I was through. I do not recall the "flaunting" of new marriages, but it may not have been on my radar yet. What I was annoyed by, though, was not being able to tell by looking, who the more intellectual types were. I could tell the moneyed single guys by the fit and style of their suits and the quality of their haircuts (and glasses if they wore them), but it still didn't tell me if they were clever, professional or articulate. Out in the "real world" appearance tells you so much more than at a JW gathering. Not everything, but yes, more. Shoshana

Jury Duty
by betterdaze injust received a notice for jury duty, and am curious about the watchtower stance.
do jws wriggle out of their civic duty under the "judge not" principle at luke 6:37?
or jesus' kingdom being no part of the world?

But Blondie,
Wouldn't you say that everytime the WTBTS tells the rank and file that something is a conscience matter, it really means that everyone else's conscience will be bothered if you do it? Any statement from the society regarding topics of civic responsibility are always worded so as not to forbid the particular activity, yet phrased in just such a way that the members know it's a no-no.
I think jury duty is one of them. My mom sure created all sorts of drama and turmoil for herself trying to get out of jury duty when I was a kid. She got a lot of armaggedon points from her cohorts for being so persecuted about the matter. (Too bad they expire every three years, eh ma?)

(And give me some paragraphs, too, please). The editor's e-mail is [email protected] There are a few child molestation law suits pending in our region ("The Wine Country"), in Petaluma, CA and Napa, CA. This newsaper has carried the stories. Also in nearby Sacramento another case is going through its motions and hearings. If you are familiar with the facts of these cases, some letters to the editor could "witness to the witnesses" about the problem, paricularly since this boy (a child) is being touted for his religious involvement. Our local Catholic Diocese is currently under public fire for delaying a report, allowing a child molesting priest to escape out of the country. This is a hot topic around here. Thanks, Shoshana (who appreciates the irony of a "teen" being celebrated for his activity in a religion that hides and protects molesters)

Green light on higher education since 1995
by Fatfreek in---if you believe what oroborus21 (aka -eduardo leaton jr., esq.
) claimed on an earlier thread in a different section.
that statement actually was off topic and that thread is so long i didn't have the patience to wade through and challenge him on it.

The article is the black and white "legal" document that can be held up in court in a custody battle. It documents an "official WTBTS" position, while the reality of the matter was, is, and will alwyas be that those who pursue real higher education will become social outcasts in the congregation (unless they belong to an "in" family that has multiple layers of elders, pioneers, and active bethelites). Hard to establish that as fact in court. Shoshana
